Since I don’t think she saw the ring as a “chain,” I say she understood the ring as a symbol of Athrun’s wish that she would choose him over Orb. This scene is the point where Cagalli finally understood what the ring actually was. Which means that what he “can understand but can’t accept” (episode 25) was her devotion to Orb. My understanding is that it was because he had revealed he understood her decision had been for Orb’s sake. If anything, it seems like he had made peace with her decision, doesn’t it?
